To MSSCOMPRESS or Not To MSSCOMPRESS

We recently upgraded to EhP6 and as a result also had to upgrade our database to SQL 2008 R2 SP1

Someone suggested we should use MSSCOMPRESS to compress our database - that we would see huge space savings (up to 60%) - which is important since we pay monthly for hosting charges in our Virtual Private Cloud...  and also that we might expect to see some performance improvements.

I asked my SI about it and they said - they don't recommend it that there have been cases of data loss and performance loss...

Can anyone help clarify?
